Baptism
In baptism, we thank God for his gift of life and publicly acknowledge his love.
In the Anglican Church it is common to baptism young children; this is sometimes known as christening.
Baptism is a 'sacrament' (outward sign of God’s presence) in the Christian tradition that is traced back to Jesus himself being baptised in the river Jordan.
Baptism is primarily about being welcomed into membership of the Christian Church. Parents often want their children to be baptized so that as they grow up they can learn about God and the Church.
Baptism is about becoming a member of the Church and so we hope that everyone who is baptized, younger or older, will become part of the church that serves their community.
If you live within the parish of St Oswald, Winwick or you are a member of our congregation, you are very welcome to have your child baptised at St Oswald’s Church or to be baptised yourself. We always encourage people from other parishes, however, to make their spiritual home in their local parish church. There are some people, nonetheless, who have a particular link with St Oswald’s (e.g. parents who were married here etc.); under these circumstances we would be very happy to talk with you about baptising you or your child.
Baptisms normally take place on Sunday at 12.30 pm in the Chancel (the area at the top end of the church) and numbers attending are limited to 30. If work is being carried out in the church the Baptism Service may need to be moved into the Church Hall.
Enquiries about baptism should be directed to the Rector, Revd Canon June Steventon.
Anyone who is already baptised who is interested in being prepared for Confirmation or just exploring their faith more deeply is welcome to contact the Rector.
